We Remember

Drew had the unique opportunity, as part of the local Cub Scouts, to take part in Orange's City Sept. 11 celebration today. The boys in his pack are in the second grade and were less than 1 when the attacks happened (Drew was 11 months). We talked to him alot about what happened 7 years ago and why it's so important to still remember and honor the people who died and those who are still fighting for our freedom as a result. The boys stood alongside the Veterans of Foreign Wars in the ceremony and led those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance. The VFW men took quite a bit of time with them to explain why we did the ceremony five times (to mark each event on that day.) What a learning experience. Drew was so filled with pride to be included with these men, city officials, firefighters and police officers. He even got to keep a bullet shell from the 21 gun salute. His school was great not to count him absent or event late since he was doing his civic duty. We love our country and are so proud to live here.
Taking it all in.

BACK TO SCHOOL BLUES
Both kids are back to school and don't let their pictures fool you... they are quite happy to be back. Drew's first full week was last week (after a one-day start and then four days of hurricane) and Caroline started today and will go three days a week. We lucked out in the teacher department this year--Mrs. Arnold and Miss Sue are soooo sweet. My brave boy Drew has even began letting me take advantage of parent dropoff/pickup (of course carpooling with his friend Rhett helped make him brave). Whohoo! We're off to a great start and a busy month with two birthdays. Goodbye summer, hello fall.

8 more inches
Friday night, after my last post, the weatherman informed me that Orange City had in fact had 20.21 inches of rain. I should have guessed as much when I went to retrieve our trash can from the street where it had been sitting, lid open, since Thursday when the trashmen emptied it. With all the rain, I couldn't budge it (so I left it for Darrin). We had several downpours on Saturday, but thankfully none today. We have to take several detours coming and going home from water still in the road. Remember how snow left on roads turns brown and gross? So does rain....and stinky.

Fay is finally fading (or so they say)
We are on day four of Tropical Storm Fay and she has finally eased up. After dumping about 1 foot of rain on Orange City in two days we got a break in the rain today and escaped to the store for some essentials: milk, dog food and chocolate chip cookies. We attempted to mail a letter at the post office, but that didn't happen (pictures below). Several roads where closed around us and Drew missed four days of school (after only one day in second grade), mostly because of strong winds. The one day must have worn him out. When he heard there was a chance school might be closed, he goes, "Boy, I really needed a break." Typical Drew. But after four days we were all getting a little crazy around here. I think Chloe is most relieved, literally. Now she can resume outdoor potty trips unaccompanied : ) She didn't fully appreciate efforts I made to shield her from the rain with an umbrella.
No trips to the post office today, unless you have a boat.

The rain brought all kinds of critters out...for us it was frogs in all shapes and sizes.
